The Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns used Pacific University's facilities for football training camps in the late 1950s to early 1960s. Most of the camps were held in conjunction with exhibition games in Portland. Oregon's Pacific University is the oldest chartered university in the West. The Oregon Territorial Legislature granted its original charter as the Tualatin Academy on Sept. 26, 1849. George H. Atkinson, a Congregational minister in the Pacific Northwest, graduated from Dartmouth College in 1843 and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1846. Unable to accept an appointment to a mission in Africa because he had not yet been ordained, he sailed to Oregon by way of Hawaii with his wife, arriving in 1848. Sidney Harper Marsh was born on August 29, 1825 at Hampden-Sidney College, Virginia. He was the son of James Wheelock Marsh and Lucia Wheelock Marsh. He had a brother, James Wheelock Marsh, and a stepbrother, Joseph Walker Marsh from his father’s second wife, Laura Wheelock Marsh, the sister of Lucia.
